By Deven Rozario, Health Plan Operations Intern
My summer with the Pension Boards has been one of the most eye-opening experiences of my career. I came in with only a surface-level understanding of health insurance. Through this internship, I gained a deeper appreciation for how plan design, cost structures, and vendor partnerships shape the experience of care.
I explored the details of our health plans, including medical, dental, vision, and prescription drug benefits. My final project focused on plan design strategy, where I analyzed how small changes in deductibles or coinsurance can have meaningful long-term impacts for both the organization and its members. I also studied how we work with vendors like Humana, Highmark, and Express Scripts to manage benefits, particularly as new drugs like GLP-1s reshape formularies and utilization management becomes more important.
Beyond the technical work, I was inspired by our leadership roundtable sessions. Stories from staff showed how non-traditional career paths can lead to powerful cross-functional impact. Their insights on leadership and marketing reinforced how every role at the Pension Boards ties back to serving our members with care and integrity.
This internship gave me practical skills and a broader view of what it means to work at the intersection of healthcare, finance, and mission to create tangible impact. I’m grateful for the experience and for the opportunity to contribute to an organization that prioritizes both excellence and compassion.
